Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!
My name is Keri Betley, and I am the general music teacher at Washington Elementary School. The goal of general music class is to help students realize their full potential and raise their self-esteems through musical activities. A positive and fair environment for learning will be provided. Accommodations for the diverse range of abilities and opinions our students bring to music class will be made. Music class grades are based on a student’s participation and cooperation. Each child will have the opportunity to succeed at their own level.
General music classes are held every day. Each grade level will receive music two or three times a week.
The Core Music Standards from 2014 are written in the context of Artistic Processes (with process components), Enduring Understandings, and Essential Questions. Students will be assessed on 4 main areas: creating, performing, responding and student responsibilities. For the first 9 weeks students will be assessed ONLY on student responsibilities area. For the next 3 grading periods in addition to the student responsibilities category, students will be assessed on different skills under creating, performing, responding areas. Please note that not every skill will be assessed every grading period. Please refer to the Music Guidebook below for more details on new expectations and requirements in the music curriculum this year.
Feel free to contact me throughout the year, in case if you have any questions or comments.
